How to Begin

a little advice…

Ever played with the idea of creating a piece of art work but are daunted by how to start…”I have no good materials” and “what if it’s bad” …blah blah blah!

I know. I feel your pain. It was scary for me too and i’m sorry to say…that fear never truly disappears- it’s learning to accept the fear and do it anyway.

Im gonna be real with you- I’m not painting from a fancy studio…I’m currently painting on a bedroom floor in my parents home! So if I can get to a place where I have my own website and I’m creating art from my soul then you can too!

-Do you need a batchelor of arts degree? no!

-Do you have to have years of experience- NO! (although this does help so even more reason to get started now!)

What if I said to you there is absolutely nothing that you can do wrong?

*tip P.L.A.Y!! Grab what you’ve got and just play! Be a child again and explore the marks and colours you can make!

You see, the secret of creating is letting go of that inner critic. It doesn’t matter what material you use. You don’t have to wait for the ‘good stuff’ to begin. Start by picking up a pencil and doodling. Making some marks that you enjoy. play about with felt tip pens.

When we just start we open our minds up to endless possibilities which will then lead us to enquire further and learn certain skills that will be useful for our creative expression.

*tip Start by dripping paint on a canvas or even just paper. wait for your reaction. Did you enjoy it? Why not try another colour. Pick up a random old household item like a sponge or an old tooth brush and begin to move the paint in different ways.

I’ve realised the big reason why we don’t begin is because we are too critical of ourselves, dreaded fear of doing it ‘wrong’ or ‘bad’- known as the imposter syndrome.

No one is a creative imposter. It is impossible- this is old thinking that does no longer fit into the world today, a world where you can be anything you want to be- you just have to believe it- better yet, know it in your heart.

Art is objective.

*tip Breathe

breath work before starting to create connects you with your heart space and allows you to deepen into right brain activity- your magic.

let your arm move without too much thought. of course, there is much to say about Learning a skill but sometimes our logical brain wants to take over and create a barrier to creating, stiffening us up and filling us with doubt.

So…what are you waiting for?? Go get messy!

I hope you found this useful, giving you a wee nudge to begin your creative journey!

::Always::With::Love::
